An allegedly leaked interview with SuperSmash Bros. Ultimate  director and Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai discusses a potential sequel, and Sakurai supposedly says a new game wouldn't work without him.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'smajor post-launch support has reached its end after the addition to Sora to the Nintendo Switch entry's roster, calling Sakurai's involvement with the crossover fighting franchise andSmash Bros.'s future itself into question.

Since the release ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatein 2018, its has been held in high regard online as the most ambitious game in the series. It was developed by Sakurai's studio Sora and Bandai Namco and published by Nintendo, but it's most impressive collaborations came externally in the form of its large number of third-party licensed characters like Sora, Solid Snake, and Banjo & Kazooie. Sakurai has notoriously been known to overwork himself on past entries and his retirement from game development (if not at least fromSmash Bros.) has been rumored on multiple occasions, so his arduous task of securing so many characters' rights on top of developing and supporting the latest title led many to wonder if it could be his last hurrah. This was a possibility some thought was alluded to when Sakurai said goodbye toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate in his final Mr. Sakurai Presents video for the Switch game, but new information claims he's left his future in gaming open-ended.

A "potential" leaked interview from Masahiro Sakurai's finalFamitsu column has been shared to Twitter by gaming insider PushDustIn. Translated quotes attributed to Sakurai explains he is not currently thinking about the nextSuper Smash Bros.title, but he cannot say that this will be the lastgame in the series. He reportedly goes on to discuss whether or not Nintendo should release a new title at the cost of disappointing players, and one quote reads, "Currently, I can't see a way to produce a Smash Bros title without my involvement."

The Sakurai interview supposedly goes on to explain how he would rather leave future installments in theSuper Smash Bros.franchise in the hands of someone else, but he adds that he and Nintendo would have to have a "long seriousdiscussion" on how to make the next game in theSmash Bros.series repeat Ultimate's success. Masahiro Sakurai (who also created popular Nintendo character Kirby) has been involved withSuper Smash Bros. since the series' humble beginnings on Nintendo 64, and he's one of the most recognizable and well-liked figures in game development around the world.

Seeing as how Sakurai's long-term involvement with the series has resulted in high success, it's hard to imagine whatSuper Smash Bros.games would look like without his contributions. The notion of another game in the franchise is already gaining steam online, but the possibility of Sakurai parting ways with the series may be concerning to some. WithKingdom Hearts protagonist Sora's arrival in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as its final fighter, it may soon again be time for another Super Smash Bros.game to begin development after a well-deserved break. Hopefully, more details are revealed in the near future regarding both Sakurai's Famitsuinterview with Sakurai and the fate of the Smash Bros.series.
